Expert Quilter Uses Custom Die for Teaching

About edge to edge QUILTING

Michele Van Graan is the owner and creator of Edge to Edge Quilting, a longarm quilting and quilt top embroidery company. If you have assembled a quilt top and need someone to quilt a pattern on it, Michele is the wizard who can get it done.

Originally from South Africa, Michele and her husband have settled in Destin, Florida, with their two sons. She has sewn most of her life, watching and learning from her mother.

Her background in graphic design and desktop publishing guides her instincts with pattern design and machine embroidery and quilting. She is certified in teaching longarm quilting, Sulky and Art & Stitch.

Challenge

Michele is often in a classroom teaching rows and rows of people how to do longarm quilting and in the hoop embroidery projects. To help demo and allow students to practice different techniques, she builds pre-assembled fabric door hanger kits.

Michele needed 400 kits for several classroom sessions at the 2016 Applique Corner Conference in Atlanta. Cutting out two layers of fabric per kit became impossible to do by hand.

Solution

To get everything completed in time, Michele ordered an AccuQuilt GO! Fabric Cutter as well as a custom GO! fabric-cutting die based on her design.

“What used to take me up to five minutes per item now takes me around five seconds," she said. “Just a little turning of the handle and voila! Outer shape and inner shape cut in one go! I would never have completed my kits without having my die.”
