Designer Makes Hypoallergenic Jewelry Out of Cardboard
Darcie Toom’s metal allergy has made wearing jewelry next to impossible, but some good came from it — it was the catalyst for her company. Iconilink necklaces and pendants are interchangeable, lightweight, ecofriendly and won’t leave a rash if metal doesn’t agree with your skin.
Darcie designed all the shapes and the colorful patterns they bear. Iconilink lives on Etsy, and she also sells in person at craft fairs in the Midwest.
When starting her company, the first obstacle she ran into was determining which materials to use for her jewelry. Plastic was expensive to cast and sharp if cut out with a blade.
Her solution was an ecofriendly cardboard that is finished in a water-based sealer. She just needed a sharp blade to make accurate, clean cuts.
A custom steel-rule die took care of that problem. Darcie purchased a number of dies for her jewelry as well as the AccuCut GrandeMARK 2 Die-Cutting Machine. She says she gets perfect cuts every time and keeps inventory costs down by only cutting her hypoallergenic cardboard shapes as needed.
“By having Custom Shape Pros make the dies for me, I am using materials efficiently and because they are nesting pieces, it works for all the sizes I needed.”
As her business grows, she plans to expand into different shape designs and even more colors and patterns.
